What to Consider when Buying a New Lawn Mower

If you are looking to buy a new lawn mower the first decision that you need to make is whether you want to buy a push mower or a riding mower. There are many other things to consider when buying a mower, but deciding between a riding and push mower is the first decision to make. If you have a very, very large lawn and limited time, you may know already that you don't want a push mower. Maybe you enjoy taking care of your lawn and spending time outside, and if this is true, you may know already that you do want a push mower. But for many other people, this important decision between a riding and push mower must be carefully weighted before going on to select what type of mower they want. The first thing to consider in deciding between a riding and push mower is how big your lawn is. In fact, this is probably the most important factor as you choose between a riding mower and a push mower. For most people, a push mower will be sufficient if they have a lawn that is smaller than one half acre. But anything larger than half an acre is probably too big to mow with a push mower and thus may require a riding mower. On very large lawns, a riding mower may cut in half the time it takes to mow with a push mower. However, if you have a small lawn, a riding mower may be too bulky and unnecessary, so a push mower will be better.

The next thing you need to consider is the overall shape of your lawn and landscaping. If you have a lot of obstacles like trees, bushes, garden ornaments, or water features, you may spend the majority of your time mowing with a riding mower getting off and on to move things around or maneuver around tight spaces. Riding mowers do not make very sharp turns at all, so if this is a concern for you, your best bet is probably purchasing a push mower. However, if your lawn has many steep slopes and inclines, you will probably want to consider a riding mower. It is difficult work to propel a push mower uphill during the hot summer.

Another consideration is your health and age. Do you feel comfortable mowing your entire lawn with a push mower? Is it exhausting to mow with a push mower in the middle of the summer? Many people prefer riding mowers simply because they do not require as much physical effort. Older people in particular enjoy riding mowers because they can still work outside in their lawns. On the other hand, using a push mower is a great way to get some exercise.

Once you consider all of these factors, you will see that as long as you pick a mower that works best for you, you really can't make a wrong choice.
