The majority of riding mower models available in the market today are gas powered. They run on standard unleaded gasoline. The size of the tank varies based size and manufacturer of the lawn mower. For most people, a gas powered riding mower will get the job done quickly and efficiently. If you prefer something more eco-friendly, battery powered riding mower models are also available. Battery powered mowers are typically more expensive and harder to find, however. The batteries usually recharge in about 12 hours. If you live in an area with noise or emission restrictions, then you will probably need to purchase a battery powered mower.

Riding mower models are also available with manual gear transmissions or automatic transmissions. Gear transmissions are better suited to mow wide, open areas. A riding mower with an automatic transmission is more convenient in yards with a lot of landscape features such as flower gardens, trees or benches that require frequent slowing, turning or stopping. Many riding mower models with automatic transmissions also feature cruise control.

One of the most important things to consider when shopping for a riding mower is the amount of horsepower and the swath. These two things should be in proportion to the size of your yard. Smaller riding mower models will adequately mow moderate sized yards that are between ½ and 1 acre. The engine should be at least 14 horsepower and have a 42 inch cut width. If your yard is between 1 and 2 acres, you should be considering a riding mower with 14 to16 horsepower engines and a swath ranging anywhere from 42 to 46 inches. Yards larger than 2 acres require a riding mower with approximately 18 to24 horsepower engines and a cutting width between 46 and 54 inches.

Like cars and trucks, riding mower models can be purchased with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. If your yard has steep grades or rough terrain, all-wheel drive riding mower models are definitely the safer option. Otherwise, a model with rear-wheel drive will be adequate.

Other features to look for when selecting a riding mower include a tight turning radius, an easily adjustable mowing deck and the ability to attach accessories such as collection bags, aerators and snow plows. You can also purchase a riding mower with amenities to make your lawn cutting experience more comfortable. Many models come equipped with cup holders and high back seats complete with lumbar adjustment.

Riding mower models come in a wide variety of makes and models. With such an array of features to choose from you should be able to find one that suits needs now that you know the basics.
